Tierra de Animales is a civil non-profit association, dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation, sterilization and adoption of animals. Mainly dogs and cats are taken care of at the shelter, but it also rescues farm animals such as pigs, cows, bulls, horses, goats, sheep, turtles, rabbits and even wild animals such as coatis, opossums and snakes. Farm animals are not up for adoption and the wild animals are returned to their natural habitat after they are rescued and taken care of.

The shelter is situated on the 3-acres of land on the outskirts of the city of Cancun in Mexico and was founded in 2011. Tierra de Animales does not receive any help from the government and survives solely from the help and donations from people. The shelter is home to more than 400 animals. The shelter’s workers and volunteers regularly organize events to raise funds for the benefit of the shelter, since the resources are very limited and the needs are constantly growing.

Apart from shelters from the local area, who visit the shelter every week to help with different chores, volunteers and visitors from all over the world come to help in Tierra de Animales when they have the chance. Every rescued animal is sterilized and neutered, which, according to the shelter itself, is “vital to breaking the cycle of animal homelessness and suffering.”
Since the majority of the shelters inhabitants are dogs, the shelter allows animal lovers from USA and Canada adopt their pets too. That is incredibly important, especially considering that not all shelters allow that.
